We flew from Boston to Copenhagen on Friday night and Saturday morning, with a stopover and plane change in Amsterdam. Shortly after boarding the plane in Amsterdam, while we were still on the runway awaiting takeoff for Copenhagen, a woman screamed as her elderly husband became unresponsive. There were numerous doctors on the plane -- 2 radiologists (us) and a bunch of ophthalmologists heading to an ophthalmology conference in Copenhagen -- none of whom were well-suited to dealing with a life-threatening emergency. The only one with the chutzpah to jump into action was Carol. She immediately noted that the man had no pulse and started CPR while telling the plane crew to get and use their defibrillator on him, as well as to bring the plane back to the gate. One jolt succeeded in restarting his heart, and he was taken off the plane unconscious but alive. Before returning the plane to the runway, the pilot came back to personally thank Carol for saving a life.
We're in Copenhagen now, at our hotel after having our bikes unboxed and reassembled at a nearby bike shop. We start cycling tomorrow, heading west from Copenhagen.
